Hello.

I am trying to connect my Squeezebox (networked mp3-player w/ bridging capability) to my gentoo'd musicserver. When I insert the crossover-cable in eth0, nothing happens, no light, nothing. The socket is not active and thereby not detected. I know the socket works, cause I use it to ssh into my musicserver.

When I try the same thing on my gentoo'd laptop, everything work fine, there is light in the network-socket, and Squeezebox recgonizes it.

So, my problem is: how to find what I need to emerge? I suppose there is some daemon running on my laptop that is lacking on my server. How can I list running daemons?

Nothing to do with daemons - TCP/IP networking is all in the kernel.

There is most likely a mismatch between the media types of the two devices - try setting the Gentoo boxes eth0 to half-duplex or even 10mbit and try again.
Or maybe the Gentoo eth0 is not set to autodetect; if not, turn it on.

Use mii-tool or mii-diag to figure this out.

Now I bougth another network-card, Realtek 8139-chip. But no sign of life there either.
How do I turn on Autodetect?

another strange thing. When I use the crossovercable between the laptop and the server, there is no problem. There is light at the server-end of things also. I know the Ip-adress of my Squeezebox. Could i try to ping it with eth1 or something. To let them see that "hey, there is a connection here!"?
