Hello all,
I have built my first 64 bit installation of Gentoo. I used 32 bit x86 in the past. I have kernel 2.6.12-r6. I emerged the ati-drivers and ran fglrxconfig. when I startx it loads the fglrx module and I see no errors in dmesg, but when I run glxinfo it says direct rendering: No. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I already did opengl-update ati and the like. Any help would be appreciated.

| Is there anyway you can post your kernel .config and xorg.conf files? Also would you mind just telling me the few steps you took to get the ati drivers to work? Thanks! |

| ok so I have compiled my kernel (2.6.12-r6) again and re-emerged ati-drivers 8.14.13-r2 and even though I did opengl-update (also updated this to ~amd64) and checked to make sure /usr/lib/libGL.so points to the ati drivers, when I run glxinfo or fglrxinfo in X it still says MesaGL and direct rendering no. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Help would be much appreciated! THANKS! |

I ran LIBGL_DEBUG="verbose" glxinfo and at the top it gave me this:
name of display: :0.0
libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable returned false
libGL error: XF86DRIQueryDirectRenderingCapable returned false
Can I assume that this error is the cause of my direct rendering: no and MesaGL instead of ATI GL problem?
Anyone know how to fix this? much appreciated!! |

[SOLVED] Solution:
I noticed the fglrx module fglrx.ko needs libstdc+++-v3 and when you do a clean install of x86_64 with the 2005.1 CD you do not get that version of libstdc++.
just emerge -v libstdc++-v3
and the flgrx.ko module will load and you will have a working ATI driver.
(I used gentoo-sources 2.6.12-r6 and I built ati-drivers-8.16.20) |

When you say working, do you mean just 2d or your 3d acceleration works also?

3D accelertation works also.
You may read on some threads that if you have IOMMU enabled in the new kernels that it will not work, this is also false. You can leave IOMMU enabled which means agpgart and amd64-agp are automatically compiled in. |
