So, when I get to the point where I change the root to /mnt/gentoo I lose connection to the network. I have double checked that my resolv.conf file is in the /mnt/gentoo/etc/ directory and that it is the one I had before running chroot. Anyone have any ideas on what is going on? (after I run chroot but before running env-update is where the breakdown happens. Following the other steps does not restore connectivity.)

Didn't you accidentily name it resolve.conf?
Been known to happen.
And did you mount the proc filesystem on /mnt/gentoo/proc before chrooting?

And it is the kind of bonehead thing I might do, but in this case it is named reslov.conf and I just ran through it again to be sure I was running "mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc" and I am still having problems.

If you really named it reslov.conf then you've found your error.
