I just did a deep, new use world update and for some reason whenever I login or su now it spits out this:
$ su
Password:
configuration error - unknown item 'FAILLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'LASTLOG_ENAB' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'MOTD_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'FTMP_FILE' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_ROOTPATH' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'PASS_MIN_LEN' (notify administrator)
configuration error - unknown item 'CHFN_AUTH' (notify administrator)

It works fine, but I can't figure out why it's doing that or why it's saying all of that. I haven't been using gentoo to long, about all of 2 weeks now, so I'm still getting used to it. Am I just totally forgetting something really stupid? _________________ www.netsyndrome.net -- designs.netsyndrome.net -- www.mobileasses.com |

You probably disabled the pam USE flag and didn't recompile sys-apps/shadow. The errors are caused by unknown directives in /etc/login.defs (they're unknown since now the non-PAM login doesn't understand them). Make sure to recompile the entire base system when switching on or off the pam flag. Until the, to get rid of the warnings, edit /etc/login.defs and comment out the lines it complains about. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

Did you do "etc-update" after emerging? I got the same errors when I forgot to do etc-update after emerge --update world. It is caused by some packages update related to pam.
