Is there a way to adjust position and size of the displayed image in X.Org X11 from the software side? My problem is that when running X some area of my screen is unused while some part of windows is outside the displayed region. However when being in text-console mode (no X) everything is fine, so just pushing my monitors' buttons isn't really a solution.
I recall that when using Suse there was a gui setup tool while installing X where one could resize and center the display. But that was a) Xfree86 I guess and b) some Suse-provided tool. But there should be a way to configure such things then.

oh, I thought that would be an easy question - maybe I was wrong. Any suggestions how to resolve the problem?
Can one adjust screen geometry for the text-consoles?

I can't test it right now, but perhaps xvidtune is what you're looking for? Not exactly friendly though, as it uses plain old xlib.

See if xorgcfg does the trick for you. Probably the options under "Configure Layout" would be most useful. It sounds like your modeline might need adjusted (can also do this in the config file, but xorgcfg is interactive). I think whatever change you may (can't remember) need to put whatever numbers you come up with using xorgcfg into xorg.conf manually.

You might also check which driver X is using. I've seen X do that with flat panels using it's built-in drivers. If you have an nVidia card you might also try using nVidia's drivers (nvidia-kernel) if you aren't already.
