Hi all silly question but i have a file my friend gave me (Linux+ Certification Bible.ace , file tells me :ACE compressed archive version 20, from Win/32, version 20 to extract, contains AV-String, with recovery record, solid) and i want to read it but i have to uncompress it.I emerge unace but when i try to uncompress it i get that:
Code: | UNACE v1.2 public version
Processing archive: Linux+ Certification Bible.ace
Authenticity Verification:
created on 15.11.2004 by me
Katie
Could not create directory.
Analyzing
File compressed with unknown method. Decompression not possible.

Any suggestion if i can access that file? _________________ "LINUX, MS-DOS, Windows : known as the Good, the Bad and the Ugly."

Nope, can't do it.
Behold, the wonders of proprietary file formats.
Have him resend it as whatever else. Zip'd be one choice. _________________ Military Commissions Act of 2006: http://tinyurl.com/jrcto

that's because of the old unace version (1.2)!
version 2.5 is currently the latest (see http://www.winace.com/).
but it's not in portage? |

Yep, unace in portage is really old, I faced the same problem some time ago and downloading new version of unace from their site solved the problem. _________________ War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ketchup is a vegetable. |

Unace 1.2 is hard masked because of security issues. You shouldn't use it at all. As you can read in Bug 102347, even the latest version is problematic. ACE sucks badly. Avoiding the usage of this closed source compression suite is the best you can do. _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |

but sometimes you MUST have unace. In this case, wouldn't the latest version be less dangerous?
BTW: version 1.2b-r1 isn't masked |

Depends on your situation. I don't see why I should support a more or less pure Windows application. If someone sends me an ace archive and I'm interested, I kindly ask for a usable archive.

Oh, true. Sorry for the misinformation. 2.2 was the vulnerable one, which has been removed. I apologize. _________________ Please make sure that you have searched for an answer to a question after reading all the relevant docs. |

Never ever heard of reliability?
Your main mistake as well as of other people is "If someone sends ME" !
You are definitely not alone out there.... think about it. may be it will help.
That is a main reason why so much people still use Windows.
Cause under Linux such guys like you answer every time - I don't need it - so nobody will need it...
"Vi and emacs is all what you need for office applications..." (c)
Other people will say you nothing - just turn their heads to the windows...
And may be think - bye bye boy - you will never be an adult...
Like children... _________________ Lefsha |

For those who still need extract files from encrypted ace archive,
please use http://www.winace.com/files/xace26.exe under wine.
It works fine for me.
Portage version 2.5 still has no decryption support. _________________ Lefsha |

This thread seems dead since long ago, anyway the complain is not necesary at the current date, since 2.5 is in portage now:
Code: |
# eix unace
[I] app-arch/unace
Available versions:
(1) 1.2b-r1
(0) (~)2.5
Installed versions: 2.5(04:40:20 06/02/07)
Homepage: http://www.winace.com/
Description: ACE unarchiver
|
EDIT,
