system resource monitoring

i keep hearing how much top sucks at getting accurate system stats... was just wondering what everyone used to get more in depth stats from their system and kernels. i also heard google added lots of stuff to their kernels so they could see exaclty whats going on in the kernel, but afaik theres no public code for it.
