Hello everybody,

before I give the suggestion, I would say a few words about myself, so you can get me serious ;o)

My name is Vanja Petreski, and I am coming from Belgrade, Serbia. I am a student at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Belgrade, Computer Science department.
I have been working with Linux and FreeBSD operating systems for about 5 years, and with Gentoo ~ 2 last years. I like Gentoo philosophy. My last couple of projects and jobs are powered by Gentoo Linux (for example: Academic XMPP network at the University of Belgrade - http://jabber.etf.bg.ac.yu). Community is excellent, also! I am using Gentoo as desktop, server and programing platform. (95 % of my work).
I had moderated the best serbian online community forum http://www.elitesecurity.org between 2001-2004. ([ES] topics: programing, security, unix, math, physics ...)
For personal purposes, I wrote couple of HOWTOs on my local network wiki. It would be great to share that with somebody.

Here, at Belgrade, when you say: "Gentoo" to somebody they usually think: "very hard and unfriendly to install and work Linux". I want to change that!

Finally, I suggest to open Serbian forum under International Gentoo Users forum and I would like to moderate that forum.

Thanx
Vanja

Hello Vanja,

Regarding a Serbian forum, we generally like to see enough interest in the community before we dedicate a forum. If there are only a handful of users, then the Other Languages would be the best location. As a general rule, we've looked for at least 20 users before creating a forum.

It's always a good idea to mark the threads in your language when posting in the other languages forum. It makes it easier to see how much interest in a own forum would be and when it's created threads can be moved more easily. Unless i'm mistaken [CS] would be Serbia and Montenegro, but afaik Albanian is also official language in Montenegro. On the other hand Serbian is more or less related to Croatian, but i'm not sure if it would be a good idea to make a Serbo-Croatian subforum as there are some differences in the languages (and probably politically as well).
How are your suggestions concerning that?

We'll also need a charset for the forum, Serbian seems to use both cyrillic and latin characters, is there a charset you would prefer? I think as the Turkish and Hungarian forum this will have to wait until the utf8 conversion is done.

First: Albanian isn't official language in Montenegro, and differences between Serbian and Croatian are minimal, and we, computer people, don't care about politics, so that wouldn't be a problem for one Serbo-Croatina forum ( atleast I think so :) ).

Second: Ideal charset for Serbo-Croatian forum would be, as you suspected, UTF8, but for begining ( until the UTF8 conversion is done ) it's not necessary because latin and cyrillic are equal in Serbian ( and in Croatina there's no cyrillic, only latin :) ).

There, I hope I managed to answer some fo your questions :)...

Serbian and Croatian are almost identical. I guess there will be no
problems because we are all adults with interests for IT. On other hand Albanian have no
similarity at all, neither with serbian or croatian. Just my
opinion! Well, who am i to tell i just loved old good Yugoslavia

-cheers

We also have a scandinavian forum for people who speak Danish, Swedish or Norwegian, so the idea of having a forum for similar languages (Serbian and Croatian in this case) would be a good idea then in my opinion.

So @amne what do you suggest for a nice start? @pjp say we need at
least 20 members who will post in other languages for some time. Is
there anything else we should know or do?

Serbian latin test: šđžčć

Serbian cyrillic test: љњшђчћџз

Everything seems to be right :)

So, having a serbo-montenegro-bosnian-croatian-whatever (or maybe EX-YU) forum would be a good idea, simple because all of us could use latin, the languages are almost identical, we don't care about politics and because there will be more people and more posts.

Excellent idea .. I fully support it .. I wanna be part of it, too ... so .. count me in ... :)
I don`t have so time right now .. so i haven`t installed gentoo yet .. but i`ve read all manuals and I think its the best linux distro ever .. and since i`m gonna become a gentoo noob soon .. it would be GREAT if there would be a serbian forum under International Gentoo Users forum .. solving problems would be a lot easier ... ;)

OverAndOut :)

First you all will need some patience as the utf-8 conversion is still not done yet. In the meanwhile you all can post to the Other Languages forum and i'd suggest you mark your posts with some language code - i have no idea what would be best, maybe [SC] for Serbian Croatian or something? Or is SC also another country's code?

But I am not quite shure what is the problem. Serbian Latin and Cyrilic are working.

Latin: QWERTZUIOPŠĐŽASDFGHJKLČĆXCVBNM
Cyrilic: ЉЊЕРТЗУИОПШЂЖАСДФГХЈКЛЧЋЏЦВБНМ
