I am having problems getting any sound to come out of my system. I have really no idea where to start, and before I just go get a different sound card and put it in I decided to give the forum a shot...
The output from my lspci is the following (if that helps):

0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 PCI Bridge

0000:00:10.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
0000:00:10.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 80)
0000:00:10.3 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 82)
0000:00:11.0 ISA bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8235 ISA Bridge
0000:00:11.1 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C586A/B/VT82C686/A/B/VT823x/A/C PIPC Bus Master IDE (rev 06)
0000:00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
0000:00:13.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)
Suggestions?

Well, it looks as if you have two sound controllers already... one card and one onboard probably. I imagine from the output that the VIA VT8233 is an onboard audio controller.
The question is... what have you done to this point to get audio to work? With Gentoo, audio (nor anything else for that matter) doesn't work out of the box--you have to set it up. Have a look at this: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml |

Yeah I actually had been thinking things would work out of the box. So when they didn't I added another sound card. When that didn't work I went to the forum...
But I have found that you are right, I needed to just recompile a kernel with my sound hardware included and then get ALSA going and things worked, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction... |
