I have a problem with ACPI in my dell inspiron notebook. Now i have updated my kernel to 2.6.12-r7 release, but in my previous installation (2.6.7-r14) ACPI worked good. However, with the new kernel i am having the problem that the mouse hangs when the system leaves the suspend mode. I have tested almost all the versions of the nvidia propietary module (i have now version 1.0.7174). If i don't use nolapic as kernel parameter the ttys consoles also show nothing after recovering from suspend mode. APM doesn't work also. I use Xorg 6.8.2-r2 and KDE 3.4.2. Any ideas? This is my kernel command line:
root=/dev/hda7 gentoo=nodevfs vga=0x318 apm=off hdb=ide-scsi nolapic
I also didn't manage to use the new fbsplash, although i followed the instructions in the gentoo wiki. The previous bootsplash worked well. This are URLs where you can find my xorg.conf and kernel config files:
http://omnibus.uni-freiburg.de/~sr34/config-2.6.12-gentoo-r7
http://omnibus.uni-freiburg.de/~sr34/xorg.conf
Thanks in advance! _________________ Sergio Roa-Ovalle

Well, I suppose i use the kernel suspend, because i haven't installed suspend2. I use the klaptop plugin which comes with kde and also the acpid daemon. _________________ Sergio Roa-Ovalle |

A lot of people have problems with hardware suspend because a lot of times the acpi.
Quote: | The main problems are that it has a buggy DSDT and a missing ECDT. |
This is a quote from one of the gentoo-wiki's. Basically there is a standard way of writing ACPI hardware components but microsofts interpretation of these DSDT is somewhat bizare and often lets buggy ones go through. As a result some of the makers of these DSDT get very lazy. Check out the following sites as they may help you.

I'm not sure if this is your specific ACPI chipset but if it is:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ACPI_Intel_865_and_875
If all else fails you may want to consider suspend2 which is a software suspend. Its not considered "stable" by portage but there are many people out there who choose to use it. It too has its own wiki.

Good luck, post back any problems or solutions you've found for others to have. |

Well, I have followed the instructions in the wikis, disassembling and compiling without errors or warnings. That was unsuccesful, i.e., the mouse keep on hanging. Now i don't use the kernel option nolapic, and the results are the same. I also don't have problems with a missing ECDT. What else could be the problem? Maybe a kernel bug? As I said, kernel 2.6.7 worked well.

I have also tested this solution. I am having a problem with the nvidia proprietary module, because the script hibernate can not unload it succesfully. I followed recommendations from the following urls:
http://www.debianforum.de/forum/viewtopic.php?p=312285
and also from here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-325737-highlight-suspend2+nvidia.html
but without using an alternative suspend script described there. I would like to use the hibernate script and i suspect in such script i won't find the solution.
I have also checked the hibernate script without X running and it goes into suspend mode, but when resuming, guess! the mouse does not respond!
Any ideas?
