different wallpaper for different "workspace"?

Under KDE its supported natively. Under Gnome you can use wallpapoz (http://wallpapoz.sourceforge.net/)

For GNOME there is also the Multi-Backgrounds-Daemon. Unlike Wallapoz, this works with the GNOME wallpaper selector. I prefer this as is seems to integrate better with GNOME, but of course won't have as many options.
