I have had many friends ask me why after installing gentoo things like there network card dont work. They make it clear that these devices worked during the installation, but they didn't know what to compile into the kernel because they don't know there exact hardware profile. I have also seen in the suggestions section a request for a utility to help in the kernel config process.
Well, i figured that I would help the newbies by informing you guys of the /proc file system. It is amazingly useful.
for example, if you want to do a PCI prob, simply type:
also, i find it very useful to do an in order to find out what modules the gentoo boot cd chose to load to get my hardware working.
and one more thing
if you are unclear as to which CPU related USE flags are appropriate for your computer (mmx, sse, 3dnow, etc) and which kernel options to compile (mtrr, etc)
gives a nice view interpretation of all flags your processor has set.
one last thing, PLEASE keep in mind that the /proc file system is equally dangerous as it is useful. if you dont know what you are doing, DON'T write data to it, it should always be safe to read from it, but writting can do bad things
