the Gnome2 port of Nautilus is considerably leaner than Gnome1 version, and is almost usable with this ;) :
To stop it from taking over your desktop
uncheck:
Code: | Edit->preferences->Desktop & Trash -> "Use Nautilus to draw the desktop" |
Then (as root) do :
Code: | rc-update add fam default |
This will load the File Alternation Module, which will improve Nautilus performance for local browsing.
If you don't have this script:
Code: | emerge app-admin/fam-oss |

I did so, but now I don't have any icons on my desktop, is that normal or did I anything wrong? |

You turned off your desktop icons with:

If you want them back, reselect this option. |

Yes, I know.
So I have to choose between a desktop and a faster PC, right? |

Nah, not really. its just that a desktop shouldn't have Icons, plain wrong. ugly and bah.
But, avoiding SVG themes, and using bitmaped (png) ones instead will give you a faster desktop even with the icons ( I just can't see why people want them)
the speed increase is mostly that nautilus won't be running all the time, though this means that nautilus will be slower to load once you use it, tradeoff. _________________ For immediate answers, @gentoo.org :
