|

I've got an Alcatel Speedtouch USB, those green things. You read a lot about this on the forums because it's difficult to get it to work. I managed to get it to work and it's been working for a long time now but recently I've been having problems. When I start the connection the modem does not give errors and the script loads, the microcode gets loaded into the modem and al the lights stay on but I get no connection.
Now for the weird part: I figured out that the modem probably loads something automatically (dunno what though) and because of this I can not get connected. But when I unplug the modem, reboot and then start the speedtouch script at the exact same time I plug the modem back in (so the script starts before anything else gets a chance to load) I get connected. I can't find what the problem is, what's loading before the script. Any help would be greatly appreciated. _________________ The only real failing is when you stop trying.

I remember having the same problem some times ago, but I'm not sure of what i did to solve this.
How do you launch your modem ? Something like modem_run -k -f /path/to/microcode && pppd call adsl ?
Or do you use the scripts included in Gentoo ?
Anyway, have a look in /etc/hotplug/usb or something like that : there's something in there that use the modem when it gets connected... maybe those scripts are corrupted and does something wrong ..
Hope this will help... |

Kill the usb agent. Delete the script or something. Otherwise just use the relatively new kernel module that automatically sends the firmware to the modem as soon as you plug it. This second solution is the best and the cleanest. _________________ It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).

To start the modem I use the script included in gentoo:
Code: | /etc/init.d/speedtouch start |
But I've just installed gentoo 2005.1 (I was still using 2004.3) And in the beginning I had the same problem.
But now I just forgot to put the speedtch modules in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.
So maybe it was something with the speedtch module? I'll never know for sure but it's working fine right now
so me = happy But if I ever get the same problem I'll know where to look now.
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. _________________ The only real failing is when you stop trying. |

If you use the kernel modules you don't need the speedtouch package at all. Wait.
