Random freezes and crashes

So today, my machine froze quite a bit. When I tried to boot back in, sometimes it would freeze while starting services or spit out some errors. When I booted in using my Gentoo livecd and tried to configure and compile a new kernel, it segfaulted while I was in make menuconfig. I've tried looking through /var/log/messages for anything strange, but nothing is logged at the moment of the crash. Where could I look for some sort of indication as to what went wrong or where?

hmm, when you didn't change something it sounds like a ram-problem.

I had bad ram in my server during bootup it failed and segfaulted under different circumstances - without that bad ram it workes super.
