You must be doing this the hard way  . libXdmcp depends on xproto. Instead of trying to install the packages individually, let portage do its job with the dependencies:
Code:
emerge --update --newuse --deep xorg-x11

I am following this howto - http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg
I`m using the stable (x86) version of gentoo. If i try
emerge --update --newuse --deep xorg-x11
wouldn`t it tell me that i already have the newest version of xorg which (in x86) is 6.8.2-r6? Or i should try
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge --update --newuse --deep xorg-x11

I had modular X installed yesterday just to try out Xgl and compiz. Now I wanted to go back to old X. I had done this already before and didn't have any trouble. Now almost all applications complain that they couldn't find libXdmcp.so.6, so I thought perhaps they should be recompiled. I did revdep-rebuild, but all packages fail with an error similar to
Code:
libtool: link: `/usr/lib/libXrender.la' is not a valid libtool archive

This error is particular to gtk+, but all compiles fail with an error regarding to libXrender.la. I tried recompiling xorg-x11 and emerge -e system. I don't like the idea to emerge -e world because I did that with the gcc upgrade and that takes days. Anyone have a suggestion on what to do?

Use portage as it's meant to be used. Set up the package.* text files as the wiki mentions, then portage will know that you want modular X, and will perform the emerges in the correct dependency order.

No, but aren't those modular X packages? And also, if they would be dependencies, why wouldn't they want to be pulled in with emerge -uNDpv world? I will try it, though.

Edit:
Code:

Well, I set up the package txt files as was suggested in the howto and proceeded as suggested. Everything was OK until it started emerging libXdcmp. With your help i managed to fix the problem but now i have this problem with libX11. I`m following the howto step by step.

Apologies in advance if this has already been answered - i've been searching both the forums & google for hours without seeing anything that looked appropriate...

...Has the 'radeon' device-driver now been bundled into 'x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati'? There doesn't appear to be a specific one, or one for the 'rage128' for that matter, yet they're both still detailed in the online doc's for X11R7. 8O

I'm asking this because i have a Radeon 9200SE (RV280), & i'm thinking of trying 'modular X' to see how the 'radeon-driver with EXA-acceleration' compares to the 'fglrx' alternative, but i can't find any information about what to put in /etc/make.conf's 'VIDEO_CARDS' variable in order to use the open-source version. Has anyone with similarly-compatible hardware done a comparison, already? :?

Haven't found an answer for my problem with xorg7. I'm using custom keyboard layout (working under xorg 6.8.99-r15) but it doesn't word under Xorg 7. I've only done symbols file for it (it's located in /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pc). Setxkbmap doesn't help much - it just says "Error loading new keyboard layout". I tried modifying existing layouts in symbols/pc directory and loaded them - nothing changed.

But what is confusing is that my custom layout get loaded partially. Letters and numbers (with and without shift) work fine except A with ring, A with two dots and O with two dots. Nothing with altgr or altgr+shift works.

Any fonts which appear to have been unreadably "blurred", are probably caused by autohint and/or antialias being off. I've added an example configuration for LCD monitors.

How did you actually update to xorg7 ? I still haven`t solved my problem. I`ve first unmasked the necesarry packages and then uninstalled the old xorg and then
emerge -avt xorg-x11 xkbdata xev xdpyinfo xvinfo xset xdriinfo xprop imake makedepend.
However it can`t emerge libX11 (it`s the first of about 94 packages.

You're supposed to unmerge it, not unmask it

I have the same problem with x11-misc/xkbdata - i don`t have x11-misc/xkeyboard-config yet it says that it blocks xkbdata.

This is from the 'xorg-server-1.0.1-r3' ebuild :-
Code:
RDEPEND="......
   || ( x11-misc/xkeyboard-config x11-misc/xkbdata )
        ......"

Which i think means that one or the other is a runtime-dependancy for the server, with preference given to the former if neither is already present. If you emerge xorg-x11, you'll pull in the server as a dependancy, so when you then try to emerge xkbdata, you'll already have emerged xkeyboard-config.

To get round this, you could try emerging xkbdata first, so it's already on your system when the server is emerged - that way, it'll re-emerge it rather than the other package. 8O

...But that's pure theory on my part - i won't be starting this procedure until later next week.

Sorry if this has been covered but I have googled + searched the forums several hours regarding this issue... After migrating to Xorg 7.0 and successfully emergin the fonts suggested in the Wiki guide http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg whenever I try to start xterm I get the following:

Code:
xterm:  unable to open font "-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--25-130-75-75-c-70-iso8859-15 ", trying "fixed"....

Extract from my xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Files"
        RgbPath      "/usr/share/X11/rgb"
        ModulePath   "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/misc"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/TTF"
        FontPath     "/usr/share/fonts/Type1"
EndSection

Any ideas?

I have already tried it but it depends on libX11 and as i`ve posted above i can`t get it to emerge. The interesting thing is that before the errors started in the make stage of the process (i`ve posted the output) but now they start in the configure part. It complains about missing keysymdef.h (in config.log it`s in the line configure 23163) or something similar. I`m posting the output if it might help someone. Again i`m sorry fot the long post.
Quote:

configure:23163: checking keysymdef.h
configure:23182: error: Cannot find keysymdef.h

I have the keyboard problem too but the strange thing is that I don't have it everywhere.

I have compared my log files from xorg and the only difference is that one tells me it couldn't set the keyboard.

So, in KDE it works now (I think I created a symlink) and I can change all the keyboard layouts again.

But with xfce4 it doesn't work (I think with fluxbox it doesn't work either).

Here is the last part of the log

How is it possible that it works with KDE but not with the others?
I start KDE with KDM but the others with startx or startxfce4.

I would really appreciate any hints.

Hi Merlin, could it be possible that we search the problem at the totally wrong place?
As you said, Xfce (GTK/GDM) and KDE (QT/KDM) react different on the new X11.

I will try it only with twm and post the result here. Maybe the react on a different why on xkbdata und xkeyboard-config :?:
