I've had it disabled in my bios with every computer I've had for many many years now, because a long long time ago it put more load on the disk and tended to kill hd's faster.
What's the current status? I assume that's been fixed decades ago? Just asking to see if a bigger nerd than myself will scream "noo, keep it off" |

I'd never heard that it put more load on disks and killed them faster. Is there a source where I can read up on this? (genuinely curious, I've never bothered to turn it off on my disks and have found it useful) |

this was a real problem, but a looong time ago, and I suspect it was with a specific brand of harddrive OR a bug in a bios.
I can remember turning it off because a ton of people warned me against using it. I'm assuming it was because of a bug in some hardware, but I can't remember, and that's why I'm asking |

Maybe try asking in the USENET groups relating to storage...
alt.linux.storage.moderated (never mind, dead group)
comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage (43,000 msgs in the past 2 years... looks active)
(Which reminds me... I need to subscribe to c.s.i.p.h.storage again.) |

On 2nd thought... now I remember why I stopped subscribing to that newsgroup. (There are 2 or 3 trolls there who basically take a dump on anyone who posts.) |

think I'm just gonna turn it on, I'm fairly sure it was a bug in a specific piece of hardware, and I'm seriously doubting it's still an issue :p |
