Hi.

x86 -> 8086, 80286, 80386, 80486, i586, i686 ...
Although Linux support 80386 (i386) upwards, with the external math coprocessor, most of the time you read someone speaking about the x86 arch, their comments really apply to Pentium or compatible processors. So they're talking about the Pentium, AMD Duron, AMD Athlon up until PentiumIV.
Notice however, that the AMD64 and the PentiumIV EM64T, although compatible with x86 and able to run x86 code, are another arch - x86_64.
Is it clear now?

So, what do you have? Is it an 486DX4 100MHz or a Pentium 100MHz?
