I currently run a dual boot system on a amd64 system with gentoo and windows 32-bit.
The harddrive im currently using is an IDE 160GB. But because im running out of space im about to purchase a new one, and since my new motherboard has support for SATA that seems to be the best buy?
However, now i have some questions i would like to answer...
1. Is the SATA much faster? maybe i really should use the new one as the primary? even if it would suite me better to have the biggest one as storage drive?
2. If i would like to access the storage harddrive on both gentoo and windows, what is the best alternative? ext2 and explore2fs on windows or fat32 on the drive?
3. What filesystem should you use for the gentoo OS harddrive?
Thanks for all suggestions! _________________ /occe

I can't answer al your questions I think, but I give it an try:
1) Yes SATA is a faster than IDE. Gentoon has an good support for SATA drives.
2) I'am not sure, but for langer files (over 2GB) you need NTFS for windows. I don't know if it's possible to write on ntfs from gentoo. Windows has no support for ext's file systems.
3) I use ext3 for the OS harddrive (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?part=1&chap=4) |

1. Hmm, ok...maybe I should move over my system to that drive, shouldnt be that difficult, a new kernel and rewrite the MBR, and copy over all information?
2. You can write to a NTFS, but its not very stable, think the best option will be to have one that window can read, like ext2/3?
3. Think ill go for ReiserFS for the OS hardrive. _________________ /occe

1. It is possible that it is a little faster. It depends mainly on the specifications of the drive itself, such as RPM, cache, seek times etc. The fact that the SATA interface has a better teoretical speed than the PATA interface does not mean that the drive in itself is faster.
2. I would go for ext2/3 instead of FAT32. Mainly because of the 4 GiB filesize limit on FAT32 partitions.
3. This is a matter of personal opinion. I use ReiserFS myself. _________________ Comix - GTK Comic Book Viewer [ http://comix.sourceforge.net ] |

1. Ok, but maybe not that much faster then, will search for some comparisons..... If its not that faster ill probably stick with the one i have at the moment....
2. Yeah,,, probably ext2/3 is the best option. Wonder if theres another option than using the program explore2fs in windows, would be great if it could be visible in explorer. _________________ /occe

There is a driver called ext2fsd. I have not tried it myself. _________________ Comix - GTK Comic Book Viewer [ http://comix.sourceforge.net ] |

The speed is going down if you are connecting a second ide device on an ide bus. So if you are using only one device on one of the ide ports, the speed will be fast. I'am using the maxtor diamondmax 10 (16MB cach, 7200rpm) sata drives and I am very happy on this speed. |
