|
|
I decided that it was about time I gave Linux a go and a friend recomended Gentoo. So, I have been running it on my laptop for a month and I am impressed.
I have one problem though...I have two other boxes (windoze 2K) and all three machines were connected via a Netger MR314 router. All the machines can connect to the network (with DHCP assigning IPs) and each can then ping the others by IP.
However, although I can ping the 2K boxes by hostname from each other, I can't ping the laptop by hostname. Also, the laptop cannot ping any of the windoze boxes by hostname (or itself). I checked the router's DHCP table and the laptop's hostname is registered correctly.
Can anyone give me any pointers to fix this?
A few outputs that may or may not help....

Most likely the Windows machines are using Wins to find each other and not DNS. The simple option would be to add each server into you /etc/hosts file. If you wanted to get more complicated you might be able to use Samba to resolve wins... I have no idea how or if that would really work.
