PostPosted: Fri Sep 09, 2005 4:45 pm    Post subject: /dev/hda3 not found??? Reply with quote

I just finished a stage3 installation on a Dell Dimension 8100 1.4ghz Pentium 4 with 128mb ram (don't ask)

When I try to reboot the computer I get the error messege:

Failed to open the device '/dev/hda3' : No such file or directory

After I type in the password to run maintainance, and try fsck it gives me the same error messege.

I am not sure what I did wrong during the installation, any pointers?

-Thanks

Does /dev/hda3 actually exist? Maybe it was used in the handbook as an example, and you should replace it with the actual device.

lol, I probably should have mentioned that

I am using the most basic partitioning scheme there is, with hda1-3:
/dev/hda1 being my boot partition (ext2)
/dev/hda2 being swap
/dev/hda3 is my root partition just like the default configuration (reiserfs)

I am sure that fstab is setup properly and I have no idea what else could be the problem, I already had this problem once, this is the second time I am going throught the stage 3 installation

My /etc/fstab is:

Quote:

/dev/hda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime 1 2
/dev/hda3 / reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/hda2 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0

and the output from fdisk -l is

Quote:

Disk /dev/hda: 40.9 GB, 40982151168 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4982 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/hda2 14 99 690795 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/hda3 100 4982 39222697+ 83 Linux

Im a n00b. But one thing that I would double check is that you enabled the resierfs support in your kernel (not as a module).

You can read how to get into your failed boot and reconfigure your kernel here:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/faq.xml#bootrescue

Hope this helps!

R/S.

you didn't compile reiserfs as module in your kernel did you ?

I did that mistake once, and it's not a good thing to do for an root partition.

If you done that boot up on the live cd and recompile your kenel with reiserfs complied in.

I do have reiserfs compiled into the kernel, and I am missing an /dev/hda as well for some reason

I do have a /proc in fstab I didn't include it because it didn't seem important

This start to sound as a hardware problem.
Don't take this wrong, are you shure that the drive is connected, maby it's time too check your ide cables ?

if there is no hda then there is no drive detected on the first ide on the primary ide channel.

Are you using genkernel? And udev? Did you add "udev" to your kernel line in grub.conf?

Could you also post your grub.conf ? (don't think it will be useful, but who knows...)

I am beginning to suspect that it is a hardware problem as well, however, whenever I boot using the liveCD it detects the drive and all data on it properly. The computer is able to find its kernel and boot it, so I doubt it is a loose cable problem. The booting process goes as far as searching form my hda3 parition before stopping. This is after all hardware is detected past the loading of the kernel. I think I don't have module or kernel support for the ata adapter in my computer.

I am not really sure where to go from here, I just check the cables and they are in properly.

I am not using genkernel, and the hard drive is listed as master 0 in the bios, so I am back to square one at the moment :-(

You do have a strange problem, to so say the least.

You might miss something in your kenel as you mention.
Try to configure your kernel manualy using 'make menuconfig', and take some help from the gentoo handbook.
I have never had any luck using genkernel myself, and keep as far away from it as posible.

what are your computer spec, what ciphset on your m/b, and so on ?

you can also try to copy the kernel from the liveCD, modify grub/lilo (not sure what u have) and try to boot it, if it succeed you'll know it is the kernel thing, if it fail, you know it's not, in each case info is quite precious and specifies what2do next...

I have never used Genkernel, some people swear by it

I have no idea what kind of chipset this computer uses it is a dell demension 8100 I tried some google searches but it looks like no one else is either using this computer with linux or I am the only one having this issue. THis is infact the second time I went through the installation because I rushed through it the first time and figured i did somehting wrong. I will look into copying the kernel from the boot cd since that is the most novel suggestion I have heard yet. Isn't there some file you can look into on the live cd to see what your hardware is? /proc/pci or something like that? I remember doing that on older live cds but I can't seem to find that file anymore.

Well I am going to be busy for the next few days but I will definalty try all that has been suggested. Thank you for the help

You can use the command
Code:
lspci

to list your hardware. Very useful when configuring a new kernel.
