xcdroast recognizes drives, won't read CD's in them

Ok, I'm at a total loss as to what to do here. I checked and both my cdrom drives are configured correctly, as far as I can tell. I have hdc=ide-scsi and hdd=ide-scsi in my grub config. I also checked the version of cdrtools required by xcdroast, and saw that I have all my dependencies up to date.
And when I do "cdrecord --scanbus", it shows my two cdrom drives attached.

But when I start up xcdroast, it shows no cd's in the cdrom drives. I then put a CD in to read from, press load/update/anything else that might work, but it refuses to see/read/recognize the CD I had just put into the drive. I'm still getting used to linux, so any and all help would be appreciated.

What is the command line in your fstab file?

Try changing it to auto in the filessytem part. It might say iso9660 now.

my command line fstab reads like this:

/dev/hda1 /boot ext3 noauto,noatime 1 1
/dev/hda6 / reiserfs noatime 0 1
/dev/hda5 none swap sw 0 1
/dev/cdroms/cdrom0 /mnt/dvd auto noauto,noatime 0 2
/dev/cdroms/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom auto noauto,noatime,ro 0 2
proc /proc proc defaults 0 2

for my dvd/cdburner and my regular cdrom drive, it now reads "auto" instead of iso9660. That only sort of solved the problem. It read the CD if it was in there from boot, then mounted. It read the CD one time then, but gave me a huge number of errors on read about device not returning corrent strength paramaters or some non-sense like that, and spat out a blank image on to my hard drive.

Does xcdroast require me to mount drives? I can't think why since as far as I can tell, it reads and writes strait to the dev file tree rather than to a mount directory. I'm going to try to tinker some more with it, but I really need more help. Any and all would be appreciated.

Ok, so with a little more testing, I found the problem lies not in mounting drives, or in my fstab file, but with the media...I tried 3 CD's and here were my results:

-copied the Final Fantasy 7 for PC install disc for kicks...cd was made for windows, but it works perfectly with xcdroast
-tried to copy an audio CD...xcdroast choked, refused to recognize that the CD was in the drive
-tried to copy a backup of some files I had burned onto a CD-RW disc, xcdroast recognized the cd in the drive, but choked on trying to read it. mounting and reading this same disc through the command line to view it's contents worked fine

Does anyone know why xcdroast would read one disc, but not any of the others? I would really like to be able to burn images of any CD I would like, depending on my needs.

Have a look at your kernel config and check that you have Joilet (spelling) and rockridge extensions compiled in.
