So what exactly are you trying to accomplish? The emerge of KDE will pickup on the last package you left off at. _________________ emerge --info
Portage 2.1.4 (default-linux/x86/dev/2007.1, gcc-4.2.2, glibc-2.7-r1, 2.6.24-gentoo i686) |

2 Questions:
1) Do you want to install kde?
2) Do you have time to let this install run anywhere from 8 to 24 hrs? (You can, of course, still use your machine while it's installing)
KDE is an enormous package and depending on your system (CPU/memory) it may take a very long time indeed. In addition, if this is a new install and you don't already have X and qt installed, and a myriad of other dependencies may get installed as well. If you want KDE, just kick it off and relax while the machine sweats the hard work. |

This is normal. KDE takes forever to build.
One option is "emerge fluxbox", set up X to run that temporarily. (It won't take long to emerge flux) Now, start up X, open a terminal, and emerge kde. Now you can websurf, word process, code, or do whatever else you want while kde builds. |

It's not that bad then..
I was sure the
is totally wrong and will install a lot of irrelevant packages
and that I have to do a "emerge kdebasics " or something like that ..
ok.. just read it somewhere ..
Anyway.. I did again . and it is running for the last 6 hours...
My only hope is that my previous break (^C) has not messed up anything....
Do you think it will be fine? can I just invoke it by typing when the installation is done?
Thanks.

Hi.
You should take a look at the Gentoo Desktop Documentation Resources while you wait for your system to finish emerging kde. You should read carefully the KDE configuration HOWTO and you mght take a look at the KDE split ebuilds HOWTO. You might try one of these days to upgrade to the split ebuilds as that will be the default, if not the only option, with kde 4.0. _________________ Jorge.

I think it's pretty safe to abort an emerge with CTRL+c, as I've done it several times, both by accident and intentional(pretty nub to and proud of it ). You can even try:
if you where in the middle of an emerge and it will take off where you aborted. Isn't Gentoo and portage strong and smart?
Edit: At least I think it's possible to resume when you have aborted. I know it works when an emerge fails at least. Correct me if I'm wrong. |

emerge kde took several hours... I went out for coffee... work.. dinner... visiting with friends... to sleep.. and when I woke up I had a brand spanking new KDE install. =)
As to aborting emerge... I've done it several times (Had a stalled download, thought I had the wrong ebuild... couple other things, too) and haven't had a problem resuming -- in fact emerge was smart enough to resume downloading a partially downloaded package (X11 base).
Quite happy with Gentoo =) now if only I could fix my console buffer(?) issue lol...
Anyhow, emerge kde and trust in the Force... err.. Gentoo... to do it's work =) It does it quite well. |

panda2, try
Code: | USE="kdeenablefinal" emerge kdebase-meta |
It will still take long, but not that long, and at the end you'll have a basic but functional kde installation. |
