|

I've gotten my Canon LiDE 20 to work with xsane, and I really like the interface they have created.
However this thing is making an awful lot of strange un necessary noise. On windows this thing is about half as loud. It really sounds like the driver is taxing the scanner's hardware, is this anything to worry about? There are 2 older threads about this too but I didn't feel like digging them up, plus so far not a signle person has given ane explanation about this in them, just unanswered questions. I hope someone here knows. |

May I ask what you did to install it? I am trying, but i think i miss something in the kernel.
I have most things as modules, but there is no more scanner module, right? I am using 2.6.12-gentoo-r6.
I followed the scanner howto on gentoo-wiki, but dmesg only gives me:
usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
When I get it to work, I can tell you if it does straneg noise here ... |

Code: | <*> Support for Host-side USB
[*] USB device filesystem
<*> EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support
<*> OHCI HCD support
<*> USB Human Interface Device (full HID) support
(2) USB HID Mouse Interrupt Polling Interval
[*] HID input layer support
[*] /dev/hiddev raw HID device support |
Those are all the options I have enabled in the usb section of my kernel (everything else is disabled, I hate having 100s of modules). I'm not sure if this could make a difference but I use Nitro sources .
Also just checking, you are talking about the exact Canon Lide20 right? It's just I didn't see you mention that in your post. The Lide35 and some of the others don't work with xsane yet because I've tried both.
If you are talking about the Lide20, don't forget to add the follong to /etc/make.conf
Code: | SANE_BACKENDS="plustek" |
And this may sound stupid, but make sure you have the usb useflag enabled for the xsane package. I was trying to quickly go through the xsane wiki and didn't see that part, cost me more time than I saved to figure that one out hehe.
Other than that, I'm don't think I did anything else to make it work. Let me knkow if those help. |

Thanks, for your reply.
Maybe it is that usb flag, i didn't set (thought it is set on all my computers with usb port )
I'll try that now. And it seems to be a N67OU, LIDE is only written on the side if it on a stiker. (Guess its their technique's name, Led InDirect Exposure) I thought it was a LIDE, because of the sticker and lsusb said: CanoScan N670U/N676U/LiDE 20. At least, it is the same sane-backend...
If it works, i can tell you, if the N67OU makes strange noises.... |

Ok, it is working now, thank you!
And i think the noise is ok, it sounds a little rude while calibrating when it starts scanning, but after that is sounds smooth. I will check it with windows, if the sound makes any difference! |

Ok, my flatmate who owns the scanner told me, the calibrating and start sounds are louder and heavier then with his windows. The scanning sound itself is normal.
And it calibrates every time, but the calibration-cache or whats-it-called is on. I don't mind, i am not scanning very often. |

Do you know how it can be turned off? I scan quite often and I'm afraid this thing will wear out fast this way. |

I will try, maybe with some option in the plustek.conf? Don't know, its late here, going to bed now.
Did you check sanes bugzilla or the mailinglist, maybe there is a hint?
EDIT:
I wouldn't have written here, if 1U's avatar and location where the same as they are now.
You need to get some serious history lessons tought, sicko!

Thanks for mentioning that config file. I tried disabling calibration but after doing so the scanned images have lines on them. Caching doesn't seem to have a single effect on this either. |
