Hello there...I would like to know which tools I should use in order to keep my Gentoo box in order...for example what to use to keep my etc-update,what to use to delete any cruft that is not necessary, what to use to find for specific packages (and dependencies) ,how to make a proper emerge -uD world (what about toolchain? should it be updated seperately and before doing emerge world/system??) and any other stuff you would recommend useful to be on Gentoo box to keep it in order i might not be aware of...thanks in advance...

Definitely very useful is the GentoolKit. You'll find some introductory information here:

I would start here.. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-67849-highlight-portlog.html
Personally I would be lost without genlop, portlog, eix & porthole, and have recently started using cfgupdate to simplify my etc-updates.

and what about keeping Gentoo updated?? what should be the right process (toolchain, system, world)?? I've read somewhere about doing a doubble "emerge -e system" and a doubble "emerge -e world" in order to have the toolkits the right way builded and then the rest of your applications...shoud I do it this way?? is there another tool which would keep my Gentoo updated and the right way builded?? thanks in advance...

Most people get along fine using a procedure similar to what is listed below. Many will tell you that if you update packages in your toolchain (binutils, glibc, gcc) that you can do a 2x emerge -e system/world for more stability (which is true), but I've never found this to be necessary. I just update as I go along and let portage do its thing.

Code:
emerge sync
emerge -uDav world
emerge -uDv world
emerge -pv depclean
emerge -v depclean
revdep-rebuild -pv
revdep-rebuild -v
dispatch-conf

i generally try to leave /etc alone. as many others do. i try to stay away of what changes follow an upgrade of an app and go from there. in my experience, the stuff i do run like samba or apache dont see too many config changes... i upgraded samba2.0.x to samba3 using the same configs.

search the forums, there are many threads on keeping a system updated.

in my
Code:
/root/.bashrc
I have
Code:
alias vlm="mtail -f --lines=2000 /var/log/messages"

so I tend to have vlm running in an xterm window on one of the desktops..
