I'm installing Gentoo on a PPC. The install instructions on how to do it on a x86 machine says to use: Code: | CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" | These instructions are for 1.4r2.
The install instructions on how to do it on a PPC machine says to use But these instructions are based on 1.2.
What is the difference between the two? And should I use "-*" if I'm installing 1.4r2 on PPC? |

Use CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" the other method is for older installations of Gentoo, the reason for the -* is that Gentoo renames new configuaration files with a -xxxx.0000 extension.
without the config_protect set to "-*" it will not automatically overwrite .conf files etc but makes newones with a .0000 something extension, and you then have to rename them to the correct name.
From A stage 1 or 2 I do not think it is that important that Gentoo overwrites thes files, as the system is not set up fully yet.
But in the future you can change settings in make.conf to protect certain files, so they are not overwritten by update
hope this helps |
