Nvidia-settings error

hey, this is my first install and someones been helping me through this alot, but we are both stumped on this problem. I have already emerged X11, and was currently emerging nvidia-settings. After about 30 seconds, and error comes up which says the following:

Pretty typical. I get syntax errors ALL the time from nvidia-settings. Except I just try to do nvidia-settings -l to restore my xorg color correction settings but it just randomly spits out weird errors. Can you post your ~/.nvidia-settings-rc and also the output you get when doing nvidia-settings -l? I stopped using nvidia-settings because it's absolute shit, I don't know why it works for some and doesn't work on 2 computers I've tried it on. I only used it to set my gamma, which turns out can be done by xorg instead. All the other junk it comes with isn't really helpful or necessary, such as the temperature of gpu which never changes.

ok, i'm not postive on how to open ~/.nvidia-settings-rc/ this is my first install and i'm a total noob remember?

I did however, put everything in their default locations, if that helps. And i made the partitions according to the gentoo handbook . I did emerge nvidia-settings -l and it would've emerged "[ebuild N ] media-video/nvidia-settings-1.0.6629" Is this out of date?

It's easy, just do cat ~/.nvidia-settings-rc and post the output. Also run the nvidia-settings -l command in your console. That basically loads your settings from the .nvidia-settings-rc file without actually opening the gui interface. It will either load the settings correctly or spit out a bunch of syntrax errors and chineese hieroglyphs. If it does give you the errors, post those here also.

Oh, I didn't notice because I assumed it was nvidia-settings configuration errors due to the shittiness of the program.

when i type in cat ~/.nvidia-settings-rc it says either: command not found, or cat: /root/.nvidia-settings-rc: No such file or directory, depending on if i'm in the root, or logged in, or what.

How do i go about getting the latest version of nvidia-settings? by the way, i can't get into fluxbox anymore, i could originally though. An error comes up saying the following (I assume it has to do with the nvidia-settings not working):

It seems as if your nvidia module got lost. You did emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, right? If you didn't, emerge them.

Hey Billiam. Can you post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf here? I believe that's the problem... this started happening after we configured your xorg.conf with the auto-script, remember?

I had your same problem when installing, and I believe I know the problem.

Also, cat ~/.nvidia-settings-rc errors because you're in root... you need to be as regular user.

Try emerging the newer version of nvidia-settings. You can do it with...

emerge =nvidia-settings-1.0.20050729

If you get an error about dependencies or something, type

echo "= media-video/nvidia-settings-1.0.20050729 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

And do it as root. Then try again. Hope it works!

I think your xorg.conf looks allright.
I think you should concentrate on getting fluxbox to work again, and care about nvidia-settings later.
fluxbox won't start because the nvidia module is not loaded. Try as root

the modprobe works, but i still get the same error.

Yes, that should work. And billiam, to avoid having to type "modprobe nvidia" every time at boot, type this (as root) to autoload it:

echo "nvidia" >> /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

And it will. Hopefully fluxbox starts for you now.

Billiam: My bad, I accidentally put a space in what you needed to echo. Open up /etc/portage/package.keywords, go down to "= media-video/nvidia-settings-1.0.20050729 ~x86" and remove the space in between "=" and "media". Then save it and try emerge =nvidia-settings-1.0.20050729.

Sorry, didn't notice that emerge complains about nvidia-kernel being masked, not nvidia-settings...
So, add the following lines to /etc/portage/package.keywords:
