|
|
Hello,
I have a 512/128 DSL line which works perfectly. All I want to do is test the bandwidth of the line and verify that indeed the maximum downloadload speed is 512 kb/s and the maximum upload speed is 128 kb/sec.
My modem is an alcatel speedtouch 500 connected with my eth0 through an rj45 cable.
Which software is capable of rending this piece of information, and with which options should I tackle with in order to get it?
I will appreciate some help on this issue. _________________ Rounded_circle ... hum ... is it ... circled_around?

...which is simly the web interface for the modem itself.
What would you test from there ? _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

In the first place I needed to verify that typically 512/128 is my bandwidth limits, since this line was upgrated from 384/128. I logged in with my username and password provided for my DSL line, and got the info I needed.
The problem I came upon and did not manage to actually test my line is that I have not compiled firefox with Java enabled.
2 reasons for that based on the fact that I am very noob:
1) A matter of principles.
I was asked to agree that I will use Java strictly with the intention to "enjoy" anything offered on the internet. The emphasis was given on the fact that I should not "produce" anything using Java because it would be illegal.
I really was not ready yet to get involved in this issue due to an increased feeling of disgust towards this "windowze attitude" as I have just managed to redeem myself from that hell... thanks to another way of thinking I met through open source software's principles. I needed sometime to get the picture of this new "revolutionary" way of thinking and acting:

2) A matter of security
I have not understood yet. Does Java provide a vulnerability as far as security is concerned?
I would appreciate your advice if this is not exceeding the topic's boundaries.
Regards,

Well, seeing as millions of users use Java every day, I'd say it works, and probably fairly securely, too.
I'm not sure I understand your first point - emerge blackdown-jre, that is 100% open source. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Hello again... I emerged blackdown-jre and works fine. However, I found that site which detects your internal NATed ip only if java is enabled.
Tricky java...! _________________ Rounded_circle ... hum ... is it ... circled_around? |

Forget about that site - they don't even bother to write correct English.
If you want a quick heads-up on security start with the following:
www.grc.com for a non-java firewall penetration test (still consumer-oriented, but way better than that crock)
If you're still worried check out these:
www.securityfocus.org
www.cert.org
www.sans.org
Those are the real security sites. _________________ >>> emerge (3 of 7) mcse/70-293 to /

Adaptr, many thanks!
I just got finished installing Gentoo for the first time and started worrying about security issues for a future network. These sites seem to be a very good beginning for my research.
