How can I fix this?

Thanks

xcompmgr needs to know which display your X session runs on. Usually your X session will use display ":0.0".
You can find out by opening a terminal (like gnome-terminal, xterm, konsole) from your X session and run
Code:
echo $DISPLAY

If you verified which display is used by your X session, run xcompmgr like this:
Code:
xcompmgr -d :x.x -c
(replace :x.x with your display, of course)
If you run xcompmgr from a terminal within your X session, you shouldn't need to specify the display.

When I type "echo $DISPLAY" it displays nothing :/ When I type "xcompmgr -d :0.0 -c" it still says "Can't open display". I am typing this from the command line, not from any GUI/X session.

You need a running X session to use xcompmgr. What do you want to use it for without a GUI?

That means, that you are messing with unstable software (both Xs composite extension, xcompmgr) which might not work as expected. That's why xcompmgr is masked and the composite extension is disabled by default. :)
I got it to work with my geforce2 MX, nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r6, nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r4, xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1, gnome-2.10-r1 and xcompmgr-1.1.2. If you've got other hardware and/or other software, I can't be of any more help.
