I have been using Gentoo since 1.4 but have encountered problems I have never seen before. On a Dell Latitude D800 I was in the middle of an 'emerge -e system' and after several hours it stops with failing to resolve ftp.cpan.org. It obviously can see the various mirrors (with name resolution), so where do I start from here?

On a whitebox desktop I have tried to boot both the 2005.0 and 2005.1 LiveCD. I have tried the gentoo-nofb with and without the noapic option. Once it loads the kernel and decompresses the initrd, it propmts 'Ready.' and stops. Any thoughts?

Wierd..... first thing I'd do is ensure that it is software by booting up Knoppix on both (note I suggest you Alt-Ctl-F2 when KDE starts to load as knoppix's console has always been more stable than its X server).

For the laptop if you think it is a problem with one specific server (namely you can ping google) you can set the mirror with the GENTOO_MIRRORS variable in make.conf.
For the desktop, Knoppix install http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/altinstall.xml

The desktop was solved by powering off and then on. I accidently hit the power button instead of the reset button. Once on again booted with frame buffer just fine.

As for the desktop, while waiting for a reply, I tried an 'emerge perl' and all worked. Then I started 'emerge -e system' and it is still running.
