I can connect to the internet and my NIC driver is loaded (b44), but whenever I try to use a networking tool such as Nmap, ethereal, or etherape, I get error messages like "no suitable device" or "no device found". In ethereal, where you'd normally be able to select the device to capture packets with, there is nothing in the drop down box. Any suggestions?

Do you have "network" in your use flags (in make.conf)?

Its the only thing that comes to mind, just a guess. Try adding it and then rebuilding the tools.

Nope, that doesnt work.

Should the network card be listed under /dev?

What do you get if you type:

Code:
ifconfig

I get two devices: eth0 and lo.

And can you ping www.yahoo.com?

As I said before, my internet works fine. I can connect to IRC, surf the net, etc. I'm doing it all right now on my Gentoo installation.

I get eth0 and lo from ifconfig.

However, when I open ethereal or any other network utility, there aren't any "interfaces" listed (devices).

I'm emerging it now for the heck of it. My guess is it uses a special interface to the network card, and that interface is not enabled in the kernel...

I'll let you know if I get it working.

Something tells me I know less about this than you do.
