my system was compiled less then a week ago. its x86_64 stable. i installed kdebase-meta.

when i login using kdm i just return to kdm again without any message, error, etc.
i checked Xorg.0.log, kdm.log and dmesg, but theres no warning or error. the only thing i noticed is, that the backgroud texture of kdm is a little screwed and it seems to reset the display mode, or start kdm again (but nvidia logo is not showed again). logging in via startx works fine (using twm now).

Maybe your kde config got destroyed.

Delete everything containing kde in /tmp and rename or delete everything .kde in your home directory and try again

if you deleted all .* in home you will have to setup each and every local configuration again!

Thats why I said everything starting with .kde in home!!!!

On my computer was the same problem.
Check option WIPE_TMP="no" in /etc/conf.d/bootmisc. Must be set to "no"
Kdm to work need /tmp/.ICE-unix and /tmp/.X11-unix with permission set to root.root

When option WIPE_TMP is set to "yes" during booting system /tmp/ is wipping.
/tmp/.ICE-unix and /tmp/.X11-unix are deleted and no recreated.

and it's all over...

for more information look in /etc/init.d/bootmisc

Try to login at the console (ALT+Fx)
Maybe one of your .bashrc, .profile, .xinitrc, .xsession or whatever else has a syntax error. This would result in an immediately logout after a X11-Login without any chance of you to see the error message.
