there are two versions of the gentoo iso, livecd and basic.

the first one got all the stages and you can choose from what you want to start. this one it's about 200MB.

the second one (basic), has only the stage 1 and thats why it's only 40MB more or less..

with any of this iso's you got all you need to configuro your inet connection and get anything you need to install gentoo in your computer.

You don't have to download the stage3 unless you want to skip a lot of compliling during installation.

The x86 cd is small because the packages are downloaded from internet.

gentoo is so small, because every package you need is downloaded during the installation progress, in fact, if you use the stage3 tarball, you will just have to merge the X-Libaries and KDE or Gnome, fluxbox or whatever you want...

If you start compiling stage1, you will have to do the bootstrap, where initial packages are downloaded, and still have to downlod the main system. If you compile from stage1, it's configured to your current hardware, using the -march or -mcpu option to the GCC compiler.

The "basic" is also livecd, it just doesn't have the stage tarballs.

After going through the 3 stages, and deleting source files and tmp files, it comes out to about 560 Mb.
