After a good five hours of work I've finally managed to install Gentoo :) However, now I wonder what to do next. I would really like a graphical environment, the question is just: what should I go for? As of now the only apps I need to run on my box are OpenOffice and Fontforge. Therefore I see reason why I would want to install a heavy DE such as Gnome or KDE. Does anyone have suggestion as to what I should install? I would like it to be very lightweight...
Thanks.

Any of the *box window managers (Openbox, fluxbox, blackbox etc) fits your bill. fvwm is also very popular.

For lightweight desktop environment, try xfce (emerge xfce4).

By the way, you can edit your posts in this forum, your second post was unnecessary.

You have all these options ;)

Code:

[ /etc/portage/profile ]-[1]: ls /usr/portage/x11-wm/
aewm            evilwm     jwm           oroborus-extras  treewm
aewm++          fluxbox    kahakai       papuawm          trswm
aewm++-goodies  flwm       larswm        pawm             vtwm
afterstep       fvwm       lwm           pekwm            waimea
amiwm           golem      matchbox      plwm             windowlab
blackbox        icewm      metacity      pwm              windowmaker
blwm            integrity  metadata.xml  qvwm             wm2
ctwm            ion        metisse       ratpoison        wmi
e               ion2       openbox       sawfish          wmii
enlightenment   ion3       oroborus      selectwm         xpde

Well, there are tons of topics about the thing. Search a bit on these forums.

I will try to give a summarized overview of the options. First of all, you need to decide if you need a desktop environment (DE) or a window manager (WM) is enough for you. If you have a very specific purpose for that machine, then I would go with a WM. A DE includes a WM amongst many tons of applications, like a desktop manager, usually a pager, a taskbar and all that fancy toys that Widozed users like a lot.

A window manager is (relatively) small application that put the tittle and borders around the windows and, maybe, has some basic features, like a task manager or a pager. DE's are KDE, Gnome, Xfce4 and E17. All the rest in that list are WM's. If need a DE, the lightest is Xfce4, if you need a WM, well, its all about tastes, but I would advice you to use fluxbox is you are not a power user. I also like a lot enlightenment and windowmaker, and my favourite (but also more dificult to give a shot into) is fvwm. There is a very huge thread regarding fvwm in https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-333503-highlight-fvwm.html where you can find some configuration tips and screenshots. There is also a fvwm-crystal package, that is a pre-configured version of fvwm (I never tried it, though).
