I have the gentoo 2005.1 universal cd, and i boot to it to install gentoo, but i cant get my network to work properly. I am using SBC DSL service, and I tried running the adsl-setup function, and it seemed to work, but then when i run adsl-start, it fails, when i run adsl-status, it says that it cant get the pid id from the file, I try typing in /etc/resolv.conf, to view the file, but it says permission denied, same when I try to view the /etc/ppp/pap-secrets and /etc/ppp/chap-secrets files, it says permission denied, what am I doing wrong? |

I have SBC DSL too. My modem, a SpeedStream 5100, is configured to handle the login to SBC whenever an internet connection is requested. That is, the PPPOE login is handled automagically by the modem. I just use the default, automatic DHCP network configuration, as the modem acts as a DHCP server.
Important information we need you to provide:
Is the modem connected to the computer by ethernet cable or USB?
When you first got your modem, did you use the default setup program provided by SBC/Yahoo to configure your username and password in the modem?
Have you used the modem configuration webpage (built in to the modem) to change the mode of the modem from the default to bridge mode or similar?
Post the contents of /etc/resolve.conf and /etc/conf.d/net if you can. You'll probably have to boot the live cd to get the files.
Did you emerge dhcpcd before you rebooted at the end of the installation? |

well, you have to type something like "less /etc/resolv.conf" to view the content.
furthermore, to be have full access you need to be root ("su") _________________ 1. Docs | 2. Gentoo-Wiki | 3. Search the Forum | 4. Post |

Upon re-reading the original post, it looks like I misunderstood your problem. If you are saying that you can't get network access when you boot the installation cd, then we will need any network card and dhcp related messages that were displayed when the cd was booted. You will have to hit ESC or F2 (don't remember which option) when booting the cd to see the boot messages instead of the silent splash screen. Then we should be able to start to help you. |
