I am having a problem getting my monitor to the resolution I want. I have a Dell Poweredge 2400 server with an ATI 3D Rage IIC video card and a Hansol 720E monitor. According to the spec the monitor can do 1280x1024 at 60Hz. However, I can only get it to do 1024x768 at 60Hz. When I try to edit my xorg.conf file and put it 1280x1024, the right 75% of the screen is garbled and shaking like the horizontal and vertical syncs are off. Here is what my xorg.conf file looks like:

Now, I realize that right now it is set for 16-bit depth. However, once I set it to 24-bit I get the problem I mentioned above. I have run gtf 1280 1024 60 and put the Modeline in with the same results. Can anybody help me to get this work correctly? Or is 1024x768 @ 60Hz the best my video card will do?

Comment out Code: | HorizSync 28.0 - 78.0
VertRefresh 43.0 - 160.0 | and let the monitor and video card use the EDID to agree on the best settings.
If that fails, please post your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file _________________ Regards,

if this doesn't work, you can try to find out your refresh rates with ddcxinfo-knoppix

Ok, I tried what tornamodo suggested and copied the output to my xorg.conf file and I still get a fuzzy screen on the right 75% of the screen in gdm. However, this time I tried actually logging into Gnome and see what happens and I can get up to 1152x864 @ 60Hz which is a lot better. However, I still can't get gdm to look correctly. Here's what my new xorg.conf file looks like:

Ok, I tried what tornamodo suggested and I can only get it to go to 1024x768 with all the Modelines commented out and when I select the Modelines I do want, I still only get 1024x768. Here's what my new xorg.conf file looks like:

As far as what Neddy said, even if I use the correct number for horizontal and vertical sync, is there not anyway to still get it to do 1280x1204 like the monitor spec says it should?

1280x1024 with 24 bit colour (32 bits per pixel) needs a minimum of 10,485,760 bytes for a double buffered visual.
In round numbers 10.5Mb. Your video card only has 4Mb.
If the pixel buffer is shared main memory, it may fit at 16 bit colour if you increase the video memory to 8Mb in the BIOS.
If you are really desperate for 1280x1024 you can turn of the "dbe" in X but you will hate the visual, since X will draw on the framebuffer you are looking at. It cuts the memory requuirements by a factor of 2 though.

No, there is no workaround for real ram for a video card. It holds the pixel buffer (actually two pixel buffers) which is a piece of memory for each dot on the screen. This memory has to be read each time the screen is refreshed, which is at least 60 times a second. Thats too fast for swap.
You have two pixel buffers so X can show you one while the other is updated, then the buffers are swapped.
That way you don't see any strange effects from X updating the buffer being viewed.
To work out how much memory you need for a given resolution mutiply the two resolution numbers togeter to get the total number of pixels, then mulitiply by the colour depth (in bits)/8, with the provisio that 24 bit colour is often stored in 32 bits because CPUs and Graphics engins tend to work in 8, 16 and 32 bits per pixel. That gets your the minimum number of bytes to store one fromebuffer, so double it for two buffers. I said 'minimum'. It assume no waste. Graphics cards often have unused memory on the end of every scan line to make the reading out easy, so you may well need more memory than the minimum. _________________ Regards,
