grub reboot loop

Hello to you all

I just installed the latest gentoo linux and everything went fine up to the point when I wanted to load my new system.
The computer starts and the grub screen appears, but instead of loading the kernel grub simply reboots the system... again and again... and I just cant't get into my system..

config:
amd k6/2 400
128mb ram
boot-partition: hda5
root-partition: hda2

grub-entry:
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hda2

any suggestions?

are you sure you change the prosessor type during buildign your own kernel ??because thats what took my ages to find that I forgot to do it and ended up with the same problem my k6-2 333 rebootign after you hit boot in grub

the config-file itself does look quite like you describe it...
and yes, grub does load up to the point where I can edit the boot commands and so on.....

Haven't you by chance forgot to mount /boot before copying bzImage?

Yes, I definitely mounted my /boot partition. I strictly followed the instructions in the install-guide (including mounting the partitions) and even rechecked bzImage existed in /boot....
maybe I really forgot to enble support for my amd processor when compiling the kernel, like one of you said before....

OK, maybe I'm still too much a newbie to use gentoo, but now that it has happened... what can I do ......?

bott from the CD then get into the chroot enviroment and recompile the kernel remembering to set it up for K6-2
copy it to the /boot partition and give it a try

I just recompiled the kernel with support for my K6/2 and I just wanted to let you know everything works fine now...

I had the exact same problem, had to reboot from the cd and recompile after my P200 refused to boot.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to mention selecting your processor type in the installation docs? Not everyone are kernel-compilation wizards, and it's easy to overlook since there are quite a few settings in there.
