I was working away happily on my machine, when it hardlocked for no apparent reason. It never usually does that.
When I reboot, the boot process hangs at "Calculating Module Dependencies". I can leave it for 30 mins or more, it's definitely stuck.
I can boot off a liveCD and mount the root filesystem by hand. I've fsck'd it, and chrooted in and updated to the latest version of module-init-tools. No dice.
Any suggestions? _________________ "Pokey, are you drunk on love?"

Probably /etc/modules.conf is corrupted. I have had it happen in the past when I have had a lockup.
You can boot from the livecd, mount the partition, verify that the file is corrupt, it should be just a text file. Delete the corrupted file run modules-update to recreate the file and reboot.

Thanks. That seemed to do the trick. _________________ "Pokey, are you drunk on love?"
