When I try to shutdown my computer I get this message that repeats itself indefinitely:

unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth0 to become free. Usage count = 2

I have to press the power button and do a hard shutdown for anything to happen. Any tips are appreciated.

Looks like a kernel bug. I get the same thing in 2.6.7-rc3-mm1 with an e100 driver. I don't have to shutdown for that to happen - ifconfig eth0 down and rmmod e100 is enough. However if I wait for a while the rmmod succeeds and I get the prompt back.

Just to confirm and agree with you, we've seen exactly this problem disappear simply by upgrading to using the gentoo kernel v2.4.25. Other investigations also suggest that it is a kernel bug (and a fairly long standing one too.)

Trouble is, that means having to switch over to masked packages though!

Hi all,

it looks like the problem is back!
I have the same witch vconfig on a 2.6.11-hardened-r15 compiled with gcc-3.3.6

Any new suggestions to solve the problem???
May I be able to kill the interface on a shutdown/reboot automatically so that i have a workaround???

Thank and greets...
Werner
