hey, i have been having problems getting sound to work, and some1 said something about the 2.5 kernel having it built in or something. i tried googling to find out more, but to no avail. i was wondering if someone could point to (or give me) a description of the features in 2.5 and how stable it is, compatibility, and anything else i would need/should know if i were to try out the 2.5.6x kernel.
i also say that xf86 4.3 was released ago. i was wondering about similar things about it: what are the new features, stability, compatibilty issues, and anything else i should know before installing it (or if i even should install it).
thx in advance |

I would only run either if you really do need something that only those versions support.
2.5 kernels are mainly for developers (ie. if you want to write a driver or improve a kernel subsystem). |

http://www.kernel.org/
Read the changelogs for details of changes.
http://www.kerneltrap.org
Information on recent developments etc...
Latest stable kernel is 2.4.20, Anything 2.5 is quite simply unstable, it might work great or it might fail miserably losing all your work. Generally there's not much in there that the average user will need.
Given that I get minor problems with 2.4 (IDE DMA probs) I wouldn't think of running 2.5 myself. But you can always download it, compile and try it. Have it as an entry in LILO/Grub. It might however die and trash your hard disk.
Dunno about xfree86, their page is http://www.xfree86.org/
Kernels aready have sound built in, OSS drivers. |

ya I have been reading on 2.5 not much for the desktop in it. Not like the jump from 2.2 to 2.4. I won't be using for a while.
XFree86-4.3 on the otherhand has some cool features like the ability to change resolutions on the fly, and from what I understand it is still compatable with the older drivers. (I don't know if that includes propriatary stuff like NVidia's)
As for your sound card, It is probably something simple. Like your kernel being installed improperly or an irq conflict or maybey you just need a bios upgrade.
I'm sure someone would help you with that if you are patient enough to try. _________________ there is no crazy, only violet and non violet.. |

2.5.47+ has ipsec in the kernel, which can come in handy. |

I have been using the 2.5 kernel for about a week now and it seems to feel better on the desktop than 2.4.20ck3 and gentoo-2.4.20, IMHO. No stababilty issues yet, either. I also noticed that the extreme lag when I compile programs seems to have almost totally disappeared, too. Xfree 4.3 is really nice, too. Cant wait for 5 ^_^ _________________ aiya, tau tong ah! |
