Hello...

OK, I'm not very creative or artistic, but I now want to set up a personal web site. I have LAMP going and can easily put a doc or graphic on line and access it.

What software tools are available through gentoo, which are intuitive (for newbies like me) and at the same time will facilitate structuting a simple website into which I can add material I would like to display? I'm not looking for a lot of bells and whistles, but I am hoping to have a coherent site...

Would someone please suggest some software or resources that might be helpful??

Thanks...

cgmd,

If you're looking for an editor that does XHTML/PHP/CSS then give Bluefish a shot, its small and does a pretty good job.

Its in portage and the link to its homepage is http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/

I noticed you said LAMP, so assuming you want to develope in MySQL, PHP - for starters, you could have a look at these two presentations I gave recently if you are new to php and mysql - they are both in pdf format at http://www.edwiget.name One covers MySQL, the other covers PHP. I will note right away that these presentations were given to a classroom of other teachers and college instructors and the presentations use the operating system they are familiar with (not linux, unfortunately) but other than that, everything is the same.

You could also have a look at Eclipse with the php add-on for a development environment.

Kate is another great editor.

There are also many good tutorials freely available on the net for mysql and php. I am also in the process of setting up a free distance learning environment for the MLUG at http://www.maysville-linux-users-group.org which uses Moodle and will cover many different linux specific courses - the first is completed and is the same material I teach at the local college covering Linux Administration. I am working on php, mysql, and perl classes.
