Hey people,

I just emerged postgresql, and while trying to start the server it gave me the following error:

Code:

su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.

After some Googling, I came to the conclusion that there weren't any straight answers to the problem, many people mentioned LDAP, which isn't on my system, though a lot of people mentioned PAM as well - at one place people mentioned not having an entry in /etc/passwd.

This wasn't the problem... but it did give me an idea: I checked /etc/shadow, and behold: no entry for the postgres user. I added a blank entry (copied from other values) there, and now it all works.
