I cannot seem to make vlc play wmv files. Only the sound.
I have added the following to my etc/portage/package.use file as described on the vlc home page:
Code: |
media-video/vlc dvd ffmpeg mpeg mad wxwindows aac dts a52 ogg flac theora oggvorbis matroska freetype bidi xv svga gnutls stream vlm httpd cdda vcd cdio live win32codecs |
The last part (win32codecs) is my own invention. That was what it took to drag the win codecs in when I added it to my regular use flags and emerged mplayer. So now the codecs are installed. But still no cigar.
I cannot however use mplayer as it requires me to add 'Load "extmod"' to my xorg.conf and this screws up running WOW via cedega....
I have browsed around for a solution but everywhere it just stats that vlc can play wmv files |

It appears that vlc is not able to playback the newer versions of wmv (not sure which). I can play some older wmv files with vlc but it only plays audio on the newer ones.
mplayer works fine, though. Have you tried xine? That should work as well. |

After I put win32codecs into mplayer, I can toss anything at it. _________________ iMac G4 1GHz :: q6600 //2x 500GB//2GB RAM//8600GT//Gentoo :: MacBook Pro//2.53GHz |

VLC will not use the Win32 codecs, because there's no support for it. It uses ffmpeg for just about everything, and ffmpeg supports MSMPEG4, WMV7 and WVM8. They're apparently working on a WMV9 (or VC1) decoder, but it's not usable yet. It can play back sound though.
You can build VLC with the VC-1 reference decoder, which should allow you to play back WMV9 video. See here for details. However, the reference decoder is not free software (not by a long shot), so there's no hope of this thing making it into portage. It should work though. |

Thx for all replies. Nice to know that there is a reason for the problem - although no (free) solution. |

there was a free module for the vlc with that u are able to play newer wmvs .. I used that.. but after my last update world it's away and I can't find it anymore..
*searching..*
mh, I think I found it...and it's still in my vlc lib dir.. but it was only for the 0.8.2 version: libdmo_plugin-0.8.2.so
Here is a page about that: http://clement.stenac.org/projects/videolan/dmo.html |
