If i wanted to have files stored on my gentoo box at home and access them remotely, and either copy them to the remote computer (a windows laptop) how would i go about doing this? how could i add files to the gentoo machine? I can currently connect through putty..is there some better way to do this?

If your home gentoo box is constantly on, I think you have the following options:
1) run sshd on the gentoo box, then access the file via ssh, or graphically, via winscp
2) run apache2+webdav, I have yet to get the windows client to work with the apache server though, something about how windows sets authen. info.
3) more advanced version of 2): apache2+webdav+subversion, I got this working at one point (the server was a win64 machine), this way you keep track of revisions of files...

1) probably suits most people...
