According to this threat
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Gentoo_on_laptops
it's advisabl to switch off logging, to be done in
/etc/syslog.conf
However, that file doesn't exist, but there is a syslog-ng.conf
file. Is this a substitute for syslog.conf?
Thanks a bunch

There are different loggers - ksyslogd, syslog-ng, etc. - they have different config files.
Logging helps track down problems, if you don't have any, you can switch it off.
You can remove syslog-ng rom your runlevels using rc-update, and only add it when you need it. |

Thanks very much, I did that.
If I want to log who accesses my pc via ssh and so on, which logger should I use,
does syslog-ng do the job? |

"edit" your first post and add "[solved]" to the title. That's all the magic |
