I cant seem to play audio cd's with xmms. I am running a gnome desktop. default Gnome cd player works. I am running hal which I beleive is an auto loader / mounter for cd drives.....flash drives....camera card readers... when I insert audio cd....a icon apperars on the desktop but when I click to open I get "Couldn't display "cdda:///dev/hdc". In xmms when I go to options...prefrences....audio cd and try to set the directory I get a "segmentation fault" error message and xmms closes. I have read support documentation on setting up xmms and I am running out of ideas. Is there something I'm missing or maybe xmms doesnt work well with Gnome??

Did you emerge the cdaudio plugin (see xmms prefs first tab)...

Current XMMS ebuild doesn't include it by default.

Just a small comment for when you've installed xmms-cdaudio.

I can only play CD's by pressing "l" , (to load) and typing the block device, (e.g. /dev/hda on my machine) into the dialogue. Not sure why this is, but once done it plays perfectly.

(Well almost. Shuffle is always on. So I have to turn it off!)

Thanks for the help now xmms will play cd's but volume is x-tremely low no matter how loud I turn up speakers. (All other sounds, gnome sounds, and gnome default cd player plays loud with volume ) Also I have to open xmms by typing the name in terminal window (unless this is normal) emerging xmms didnt set up with icon. I wil go back to reading xmms support for now.

I didn't install xmms-cdaudio myself, but in a previous version, I remember that I always pressed +File and browsed to /mnt/cdrom, if that is what you mean. That worked with the unmounted Audio CD... but /dev/cdrom or /dev/hda etc. is more right, because when unmounted, /mnt/cdrom is just an empty directory... 8O

I didn't see Gnome since RedHat 9 (maybe time to try again? :-) )
For KDE I compiled USE=arts in, maybe Gnome wants USE=esd as output plugin for sound? If it's not there you'll have to recompile. There is a shortcut in /usr/portage/media-sound/xmms/files b.t.w. It was included in my menu after emerge.

For some reason, even though Gnome recognises it as an Audio CD (I get the audio cd icon on the desktop), I cannot browse to the CD using +file, just after pressing "l". Not exactly an hardship though! :-)

It's the same on my Gnome Desktop. I have to type xmms in a xterm to run it. There's no menu item. Again not a major issue for me. Although I agree it's a bit of an annoyance.

What are you using? OSS or ALSA? Try looking at the mixer settings. in Gnome run MENU > SOUND & VIDEO > VOLUME CONTROL. You should be able to go to FILE > CHANGE DEVICE in order to choose your device (e.g. OSS or ALSA). Look at all the volume settings and see if any are muted.

Cheers

...I think you can use /usr/portage/media-sound/xmms/files/xmms.desktop with Gnome too. I think in fact it is a Gnome menu item. Just copy it to your Desktop.

thanks I will check the settings when I get home. Volume control doesnt have anything muted and I am using Alsa driver. Havent checked the Alsa mixer latley. I will also check USE for esd. Or I can check "equery uses xmms" and see what it needs. I also found a plugin on the xmms website called "gxmms" that is a simple GNOME panel applet that lets you control the basic functions of the X Multimedia System (XMMS).

I was about to mention gxmms: it's in portage and it works quite nicely :)

okay added needed files to USE updated using
Code:
emerge -uDN world
After that did a
Code:
emerge --sync
Then received message that portage needed update. So then I did
Code:
emerge -update world
But unfourtunalty xmms still plays at low volume no matter where speaker volume is set. Yet default cd player for Gnome is all good and default Gnome sounds are good.

My xmms preferences for Output Plugin set to alsa 1.2.10
default volume control in Gnome ...apps/sound & Video/volume control is set to alsa mixer.

I have nothing set in make.conf for ALSA_CARDS= I installed gentoo using genkernel
Code:
lspci -v |grep -i audio
0000:00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value

The question is do I need to put lspci output or lsmod output for ALSA_CARDS=???

Hi,

It's the short driver name you use for ALSA_CARDS=, in your case emu10k1. Check it here... http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/.

But I think it's best to follow the Gentoo ALSA Guide. They recommend to use the kernel driver, so you can unmerge the media-sound/alsa-driver package if you use it. Or is ALSA_CARDS= needed for genkernel? Then it,s OK. :-)

After a "emerge -uDN world" you should do a "revdep-rebuild" to get your new USE flags into all packages installed. Although it's a good thing to have all software up-to-date, I doubt that it will solve the problem.

If your hear low sound, it's means it's working, and it cannot be a driver problem. It must be a config problem. It's a good thing to compile some output plugins in XMMS, like alsa, oss and esd, so you can try what works best. And configure them in XMMS prefs first tab... Can't help you with the Gnome part. But I believe ESD is the KDE's ARTS counterpart, which can mix your music and system sounds at the same time (correct me if I'm wrong..). Maybe esd is best to use for Gnome? It would explain the different sound levels you currently have too.

Try the following:
In xmms options -> preferences, select the CD Audio player 1.2.10 in the Audio plugins, and click configure.
In the device section, make sure that 'Digital audio extraction' is enabled instead of 'Analog'. This should grey all options below in Volume control section.

Something so simple overlooked. Analog was enabled instead of digital. Xmms volume is good now. Thanks to all who have helped.

Cool! :D

Actually it took me a while before realizing that I've had the same problem in the past!
