|
|
Alot of my freinds use linux and I thought Id get into the scheme and do it also.
I built a whole new computer for the whole purpose of running gentoo, however after while i found it useful to have windows isntalled on the computer at the same time. I have a 80GB SATA HD, and here is how things go:
1.) Put the computer together, wired it up correctly, etc.
2.) Installed Gentoo, 1/2 way through found out that i needed to also have windows.
3.) Removed partitions started over
4.) Installed Windows 2000 on about 38.7GB worth of the HD (i used as close as 1/2 of the useable HD for win2000)
I used that setup for around 3 days before I could get to work on the gentoo installation.
When i finally got around to it this is what i have for /dev/sda

Take note that it says it is a 80GB HD.
While in win2000 i noticed that it has a C: drive (what it used) and a D: drive (unused but dedected as a seperate HD)
So i did /dev/sda1 (just for curiousity) and i got this

Take note that there were other partitions there and that i just removed them and then setup the partitions that are in the manual thinking i was on to something and getting it setup. (take note that it is only 39.9GB)
When i went to setup the file system this is what i get

Im not sure whats going on. I was going to start from scratch but the person that was helping me said that windows needed to be installed first... which is what I did. They couldnt figure out what was going on so I thought the dedicated helpers here might be able to shine some light on the issue, thanks in advance and if yuou have any questions reply!!! Im not sure how well i explained everything. |

So from what I can determine is this:
1) Windows got installed to what linux calls /dev/sda1
2) Windows made the rest of the disk into another partition.
3) You then did "fdisk /dev/sda1" and assumed that the information given in there was actual partition information (it wasn't since /dev/sda1 isn't a disk).
4) You messed around with the "partitions" you saw above.
So now you've pretty much hosed your windows install. I see no way of fixing that part without reinstalling windows from scratch. |

only way i did it with 2k is make a 32meg boot part in livecd and then do windowze setup and make the size u want and leave the rest of the disk so windows is on the second partition then make your swap and root afterwards... so you have
boot on first
windows on second
swap on third
root on fourth
(my setup) _________________ Main:

Windows works perfectly fine still. Im on it right now. Windows is installed on /dev/sda if you look at the first 2 images. I cant understand when i try to create the other partitions on /dev/sda it says im out of diskspace when there is still 1/2 a harddrive unused.
Any Suggestons on whats going on? Id be happy to restart all over again and reinstall windows2000 etc, but if I had some more information on what I had done wrong that would be great. |

It says you have no disk space because 100% of your disk is taken up by disk partitions
You've got a disk with 9726 cylinders.
You've got an NTFS partition that goes from cylinder 1 to 4863.
The rest of the disk (cylinders 4864 to 9726) is an extended partition.
Inside this extended is 1 fat16 partition.
If you delete /dev/sda5 you can then create new partitions inside this extended for gentoo
So you are incorrect in stating that half of the disk is unused. |
