Hey everyone, i've been checking out these forums for quite a long time and finaly decided to just get in the gang.
Guildwars seems like the #1 game i'll be getting when i get a new pc. (right now i have a 500mhz ibook mainly for surfin' and such. it's a cute lil' toy LOL.
Anyhow, i'll be getting a pc soon [within a couple weeks or so] and looking to of course get LINUX. i was sooo tired of stinking windows i got me a apple. which is a sweet lil' laptop, but i can't do ANY gaming on it
anyhow, I'm liking the community that is here with Gentoo and I have fealt a sense of security with the gentoo distro.
anyhow, i was wondering if anyone had any eyecandy of guildwars under gentoo?
and one last thing lol...i'm looking to spend about $500 for the box, $250 for a 15" LCD which won't leave me with much left for a graphics card. is there any graphics cards anyone here would recommend? [must be less then $200 please.] |

Unfortunately, Guild Wars isn't in the best of ways with Cedega. Check out this wiki about the current state. You will probably need Point2Play, which isn't free, costs 15$ for a 3 month subscription (updates).

Look towards anything Nvidia on Linux!
Personally I love my PCI-E Nvidia 6600GT, but it cost 200 when I bought it.
Personally I recomend:
Asus A8n-SLI Premium
AMD Athlon64 3000+
512MB DDR400
Nvidia 6600GT PCI-E
Some CRT 19'' Monitor
Or switch to some 17'' monitor and buy a cheap hard-drive...
If you already have a DVD-writter or reader....
That is a really good barebone! Loads of way to grow!
Of course if you don't need such a GPU, then any Nvidia thing should be fine!
The GeForce 5200 should be a good cheaper GPU!
Or some with TurboCache is also cheaper It will share the normal RAM with GPUs RAM, and loose some performance!
Just make sure it's PCI-E! |

Yeah, I would suggest >5200 if you want to do games. I use a ATI 9600XT, and it works great for playing games, I run 64bit UT2004 and 32bit Doom3, but I think the nvidia drivers are slightly better.
I have been waiting for GuildWars to work under cedega, but it hasn't quite been there yet... |

i wouldn't suggest playing guild wars on linux (with cedega). it's too damn laggy, and my system is pretty high end. it still runs ok, but it's way better playing it on windows. maybe if they can enhance the speed, it will be worth playing. _________________ If you fall off a cliff, you might as well try to fly. Thanks much for the replies I'll be continually watching this thread for anythin' else and thanks again for the responses. I think I'm going to go Nvidia line with the better drivers and also wait a lil' while [aww man] to get a decent card.
TY much,
aero. |
