on an Apple Powerbook G4 800 mhz, emerge xfree doesn't work. it seems to fetch fine, and it compiles for nearly an hour before make errors start to happen. here's where it goes wrong

collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make [3]: *** [bdftopcf] Error 1
make [3]: leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.1-r2/work/xc/programs/bdftopcf'
make[2]: *** [install] Error 2
make [2]: Leaving directory '/var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.1-rd/work/xc/programs'
make[1]: *** [install] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory 'var/tmp/portage/xfree-4.2.1-r2/work/xc'
make: *** [install] Error 2

!!! ERROR: x11-base/xfree-4.2.1-r2 failed
!!! Function src_install, Line 231, Exitcode 2
!!! (no error message)

what the christ is happening? and also, isn't xfree 4.3 out? why isn't that showing up on the portage tree? (i emerged rsync and sync right before xfree). How do you set ACCEPT_KEYWORD variables?

export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~ppc

as to why the compile is failing what are your CFLAGS, portage version, gcc version, etc

I was able to emerge xfree.

I used emerge -u --emptytree xfree

The --emptytree flag tells portage to rebuild all dependencies for this package - as well as this package.

Anyway it worked for me :)
