I have a gentoo amd64 box at home, to which I would like to SSH from school (using Hummingbird Exceed as an X-server on Windows). Try as I might, I cannot get KDE apps to run in this way (I've tried Kile, Kate, Konsole). I know that the X-server works, because I have managed to run scilab and xclock in this way.

Is there anything else that I could do (bar running a full KDE session)?

I'll be grateful for any advice, tips etc.

Kind regards

Alet

PS. I've also downloaded XliveCD, and will burn it onto a CD tonight, to have a different X-server to test with.

have you started a virtual desktop to connect to ?
on the machine you want to connect to do
Code:
vncserver
( as a user who uses the GUI) . should start up a desktop:1

I then connect to it with an SSH tunnel an VNC
putty in windows sets up a tunnel from localhost:5900 to remote IP(192.168.0.x:5901).

VNCviewer (from tightvnc) running on the windows machine and connected to 5900 b
rings up my KDED desktop
